New Naturopathic Diet: How to Manage Your Weight, Prevent Illness and Achieve Optimum Health
Published in Paperback by Quarry Press (October, 2002)
Authors: Penny Kendall-Reed and Stephen Reed
Average review score:

Excellent !
The Naturopathic Diet is an excellent book. After reading it, I'm now following the diet. It's an easy read that explains all of the aspects of the diet very clearly. I was very sceptical about "protein" diets, however Penny has made it all clear to me. She teaches you a very simple two stage plan on how to lose weight gently and safely, and in a healthy and organic way. You are not deprived of foods the way other diets have been known to do. After you have safely lost the desired weight, you then easily maintain, reintroducing some of the foods that got you onto a diet in the first place. But, this time using a much smarter and healthier approach. And all this time you've become a much healthier person because the diet also cleans and detoxifies your system. I'm very excited to be on the Naturopathic Diet because I really feel that this time I'm going to stick with it and get results. It's that simple!

On the Mayflower: Voyage of the Ship's Apprentice & A Passenger Girl
Published in School & Library Binding by Scholastic (October, 1996)
Authors: Kate Waters, Russ Kendall, and Russell Kendall
Average review score:

This book is a treasure !
I am a big fan of Kate Waters' books, "Samuel Eaton's Day" and "Sarah Morton's Day". It was with great excitement that I found this book to accompany them ! All too many books about the pilgrims either portray them as "Evil bigots" or as the glossed over "wouldn't it be fun to be a pilgrim ?" portrayal. I enjoy all of these books because they give an accurate, historical representation of the times. ON THE MAYFLOWER, in particular, gives both a peek into the day to day living on board the ship, as well as the view as seen from a child's perspective. I highly reccomend this book !

Poisoned Arrows: The Stalin-Choibalsan Mongolian Massacres, 1921-1941
Published in Hardcover by Westview Press (October, 1999)
Authors: Shagdariin Sandag, Harry H. Kendall, and Frederic E. Wakeman
Average review score:

A Mongolian Gulag Revealed
Mongolia has fascinated me since I first read about Roy Chapman Andrews' 1920s paleontological expeditions there, which found some of the world's most famous fossils. Andrews drew a marvelous picture of a vast, vibrant country which once had ruled most of Asia and part of Europe, but he emphasized its archaic, exotic elements. Sandag and Kendall's POISONED ARROWS: THE STALIN-CHOIBALSAN MONGOLIAN MASSACRES, 1921-1941 does a lucid scholarly job of telling a little-known other side of the Mongolian story. Although emerging from feudalism in the early 1900s, Mongolia already had produced a class of leaders and intellectuals who aspired to make it a modern democratic society. According to Shagdariin Sandag (a prominent Mongolian historian), Soviet communism, while professing to support Mongolian modernization, actually prevented it through decades of repression which virtually exterminated its leadership, exploited its resources and left it poorer than it had been in 1920. Sandag's own father was among those "liquidated"-- he disappeared in 1939 and his fate (execution as a "Japanese spy") remained unknown until 1993. Sandag brings strong feelings as well as a wealth of detailed documentation to the story, which resembles Solzhintsyn's GULAG ARCHIPELAGO. He and co-author Harry Kendall tell the story well, although it is a horrific one. The relentlessness of Stalinist brutalities and duplicities (perpetrated not only by Soviets but by Mongolian Stalinists) seems nightmarish and insane. But the story should be known by anyone with a serious interest in central Asia, which, lying between Russia and China, is an increasingly important part of the world.

David Rains Wallace is a writer specializing in natural history and conservation. His latest book is THE BONE HUNTERS REVENGE: DINOSAURS, GREED, AND THE GREATEST SCIENTIFIC FEUD OF THE GILDED AGE.

A wonderful book!
The book "Russian Girl--Life in an Old Russian Town" has to be one of the best works of children literature I've ever read.Russ Kendall is not afraid to get up-close and personal in his photography and writing.Everything from the little girl(Olga) losing one of her baby teeth to her fear of being called on in her third-grade class is covered in this book.I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the Russian way of life or for those with young children who can easily relate to how Olga feels.I give this book a definite 5-stars.

Sarah Morton's Day Beautiful Photos
Live photos. Great story. The notes in the back on history of the Plimoth Plantation and who Sarah Norton really are cool. Sarah Morton was really a girl who lived in a house with dirt floor in 1627. There's even a glossary in the back.

The Secret Keepers
Published in Paperback by Haleys (May, 1999)
Author: Jay Kendall
Average review score:

Kendall's book is a slice of American World War 2 nostalgia.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Jay Kendall's book. His characters are a vivid and realistic example of rural New England folk during World War 2. The book is written from the viewpoints of the different characters. Each chapter, or in some cases each part of a chapter, takes on a flavor distinct to the narrator. Michael, the first narrator, is a young boy who certainly has a grown up outlook. His grandfather, who is also introduced in the first chapter has a little idiosyncrasy - he speaks of himself in the third person. Although this is a bit odd, it gives a warmth to his personality. Each of the characters comes to life through their own words or through the words of other characters. The cover of the book is an intricate quilt. The story begins much as a quilt begins with fragments that have no real connection until Mr. Kendall begins to tie the pieces together and the reader begins to see the intricate pattern of the quilt fall into place. Although the characters are all basically good people, the secrets they've kept are revealed as the story progresses and these secrets have the potential to do some damage. Parts of the book will make you laugh out loud, parts will make you cry, but when you finish reading it, you'll find yourself looking for more.
